Darian Mederos
Darian Mederos paints with the viewer in mind. Born in Cuba and now working in Spain, he trained in Santa Clara and Havana before leaving the island at twenty-two. His practice has moved from hyperrealist portraits and the painted bubble wrap of Obscura towards fragmented figures and spaces. A thread runs through it all: the memories and experiences that shape what we see.
About Darian Mederos
Born in Santa Clara, Cuba, in 1992, Mederos trained at the Leopoldo Romañach art school and the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in Havana. That education gave him a precise understanding of light, form and the human figure. It remains the foundation of a practice that keeps finding new directions.
At twenty-two he left Cuba alone and moved to Miami. He now lives and works in Spain. His paintings have been presented by galleries including Conde Contemporary, Arcadia Contemporary, HOFA and Maddox, and are held in private collections across the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia.
In Obscura, hand-painted bubble wrap stood between the portrait and the viewer. The familiar protective surface became a barrier, making a face harder to reach. Up close, the image breaks into paint and light. Step back and the portrait returns. Looking becomes something you do with your whole body.
Recent paintings move towards fragmented figures and spaces, leaving more room for the viewer to complete an image. For Mederos, memory is never a fixed record: feelings and impressions change each time we return to them. A painting carries his experience, then meets yours. Its meaning continues to grow in that exchange.
